Historical drama consistently displays the sense of history prevalent when it was written: a 17th century quest for precedent and analogy; the affirmation of cosmic order in the 18th century; the Romantic search for manifestations of spiritual purpose; in Victorian times, a demonstration that humans control events; and the early 20th century promise, emulating science, to present the facts objectively.

Contemporary British history plays, however, demonstrate different agendas for history itself. Marxist plays illustrate a historical dialect leading to the emergence of Communism. Oppositional history takes the point of view of the disenfranchised, the defeated, or the oppressed. Social histories refocus attention away from movers and shakers onto groups of small players. Feminist historians expose the biases of a male dominated hegemony and confront the role of gender in history. Deconstructionists debunk our confidence in historical metanarratives. Postmodernism uses anachronism and stylistic eclecticism to emphasize parallels in different historical periods or to relate historically defined metaphors and rituals to modern experience. Both playwrights and critics confront the implications of the idea that history is constructed and not simply found, and new approaches to history demand innovations in the staging and structuring of plays.

His specialty in theatre aesthetics encompasses topics ranging from stage lighting to dramatic theory. Purportedly an alarming account of the "commoditization of natural resources and of life itself," this volume is actually something tamer—a comprehensive guide to the world’s major commodities, from diamonds and human beings to the skies and oceans. Ridgeway, a staff writer for the Village Voice, professes horror that a small number of corporations would ever seek to form cartels and exploit the fundamental necessities of life (even though he notes in his introduction and elsewhere that this has always been the case) and observes that things are getting worse. Maybe. It is disturbing to read that, after World War I, America and Britain created a joint venture known as the Iraq Petroleum Company and that "with modernized industry Iraq could produce quantities of oil sufficient to rival Saudi Arabia." Still, Ridgeway doesn’t balance his accounts of cartels and exploitation with an examination of the economic forces that drive commoditization, the advantages of economic development for developing countries or the process of economic evolution. Worse, Ridgeway discusses only problems, not solutions. The book is organized commodity by commodity. Ridgeway gives a brief, and sometimes fascinating, description of the usefulness and history of each substance, its exploitation by the few and its inevitable depletion. But he stops short of suggesting any wise or fair methods of allocating resources, and this omission seems to suggest that corrupt markets are inevitable. Perhaps Ridgeway’s largest failing is his tacit suggestion that commoditization is necessarily evil. Things have an economic as well as a spiritual existence, and the recognition of their market value is a useful, and necessary, first step in determining their true price.

I can't believe I'm the first person to review this book?! I think any social entrepreneur/activist would benefit from this summary of how our surroundings, and even our bodies, are being commiditized. The most disturbing statistic in the book for me was how there are more people in slavery today than at any other time in human history?! I think a book like this compliments 'The World is Flat' very well. There is a dark underbelly to globalization that can be remedied by socially conscious captilism. (...)

The plates illustrate Haeckel's fundamental monistic notion of the "unity of all living things" and the wide variety of forms are executed with utmost delicacy. Incipient microscopic organisms are juxtaposed with highly developed plants and animals. The pages, ordered according to geometric and "constructive" aspects, document the oness of the world in its most diversified forms. This collection of plates was not only well-received by scientists, but by artists and architects as well. Rene Binet, a pioneer of glass and iron constructions, Emile Galle, a renowned Art Nouveau designer, and the photographer Karl Blossfeld all make explicit reference to Haeckel in their work.

A most excellent book

The illustrations are awesome, there's a universe of beautiful complex lifeforms that are too small for us to see. The illustrations are all in color, unlike other versions of Ernst Haeckel's prints, and it also has lots of text in the front about Ernst Haeckel's work, an autobiographic timeline in the back etc... Unbelievable art

Beautiful book! Highly recommended.

This is such a lovely book, I just HAD to let all you readers know. I didn't know anything about Haeckel (never even heard of the man.....), when I ordered this book. I just loved his drawing of the Medusa on the cover, and couldn't resist buying it, and boy, am I glad that I did..... There is such a quiet beauty in these plates.

The book is also published by Dover (see my review there), without any accompanying text (apart from a short publishers's note), and with all the plates printed in black and white.

In this book, many of the plates are printed 'in color' (either different hues of one color, or a color scheme based on two colors). The book also has a highly informative article on Haeckel and his times, and on those that were influenced by him.

I find it very hard to explain what exactly makes these plates so wonderfully beautiful. It is partly the symmetry of their composition, and the way in which they render the beauty of nature. The article in the book itself describes it very well:

"What is it that Haeckel depicts here that is so beautiful? It is the beauty of ornament. The forms illustrated in these pages seem to fit seamlessly into the repertoire of Art Nouveau forms. [........] Haeckel's approach did not determine Art Nouveau, instead Art Nouveau's approach determined Haeckel's. What ensued was a symbiosis between decorative sketches and descriptive observations of nature [...]."

Cupcake Jemma is amazing, as are her recipes. They are simple enough for the novice baker, and fabulous enough for even professional bakers.

Don't order if trying to lose weight

This book looks mouth-wateringly delicious, I'm supposed to be trying to lose weight so part of me wishes I'd never ordered this but if I'm being honest I can't wait to get started.
This, like the BBQ book has the recipe on one page with a full colour photo of the finished item on the opposite page, there's also a page of hints & tips.
I spotted this book while looking around for a BBQ book for my husband, I can't remember the last time I bought myself a cookery book I generally get them as presents so I have a really good selection but I really liked the look of this. As with the BBQ book I noticed a complete content list wasn't given so I've added one at the end for you.
I don't generally review cookery books since by the time I've tried enough of the recipes to give a fair review I forget, yes, every single time, I always have good intentions but somehow I never get round to it but I'm making an exception since I thought it would be helpful to give a list of the recipes included and I'll add to the review as I try them out.
One tip I picked up from a friend years ago and I've followed ever since is to make little notes at the side of the recipes, I was horrified the first time I looked through one of her baking books to notice notes scribbled at the side of the recipes I couldn't believe anyone would write in a book, but she explained that you have a cookery book for life and you can forget so she wrote a little review at the side of each one. Turned out to be an excellent idea and one I've followed ever since, it really helps me because I've got a memory like a sieve so thank you Karen.

As a lover of Lemon, Coconut, Raspberries, Eton mess (my all time favourite) Maltesers oh the list goes on and on and I think this review is long enough already but I really don't know where to start, Super-Lemony Meringue Cake I think....or the Raspberry Ripple Layer Cake...decisions, decisions I can almost feel the weight settling on my hips just from thinking about them.

Yes, I know as if this review isn't long enough already but I did promise updates I'll try to keep it short.
We've made a selection of these cupcakes we use large muffin cases so the mixture when cooked only half fill them which turned out to be ideal once topped.
One thing we found is that the topping recipes, all the ones we tried anyway made too much in fact we made the cheesecake topping and topped all the blueberry cupcakes and had so much left we added lemon juice and meringues and used it to cover the Lemon Mess ones as well.
The Blueberry Cheesecake were my favourite and everyone else's as well, the biscuit base, sponge and then cheesecake with blueberry fruit goo topping was heaven.
The Lemon Mess were very good even if we did change the topping.
Raspberry and Coconut Cupcakes again were good but very sweet, maybe a little too much topping for me.
We made our own Cookie Monster and Oreo cupcakes using the chocolate cupcakes recipe from page 18, I loved it but my daughter felt it was too dry, but luckily once they were decorated everyone loved them.
If anyone's interested or even reading this far, for the Oreo ones we place a full Oreo cookie in the muffin case then we place mixture on top, bake and when cool we add broken Oreo cookies to the buttercream and mix well, we pipe this, using either a very large nozzle or just a plain piping bag made from grease proof, it has to be large obviously due to the chunks of biscuit, then place a mini Oreo at one side.
For the Cookie Monster we top with buttercream then dip it in desiccated coconut mixed with some blue food colouring then we slice half way across horizontally and slide a chocolate chip cookie in, this makes the mouth, for the eyes we then stand two white chocolate buttons on and paint the pupils on with black food colouring.
