Finally, someone challenges the normalities of Architecture.

This book is by far one of the best books I have read in a while. It is simple and to the point and Zevi does not hold back. It is a little dated, but all of his seven principles are able to be directly applied to the current state of architecture. This should be a mandatory reading for all architecture students. His opinions of the tendencies within society to praise the priciples of Symmetry, proportion, and order, show how architecture has been plagued by standardization and repetitive forms throughout history. A great book for anyone who is troubled by the generality of architecture (with great exception to the current masters, no less)and would like to see the boundries broken.

An Architectural Classic

I discovered this book in architectural school, and was intrigued at the way Zevi clarified everything I was then dealing with in vague ways in architectural school. The invariables, or "anti-rules", as Zevi calls them, are each given seperate chapters in this book. Listing of Functions, Asymmetry and Dissonance, Antiperspective Three Dimensionality, Four-Dimensional Decomposition, Cantilever, Shell and Membrane Structures, Space-in Time and Reintegration of Building, City and Landscape are all ideas present to varying degrees in various buildings at various times in history. Zevi shows how they can be used in a more deliberate and integrated fashion, no matter what the budget or funtion of any given building. He illuminates how these ideas are present in the architecture of times historical and times more recent, and underscores the value of non-conformist buildings for the enrichment of society.
This book gave me a tremendous creative boost at just the right time in my life and it's influence continues in my work. Marvellously illustrated with three-dimensional drawings and with photos, it presents a summation of the thinking of a great and scholarly mind.

A good balance of physics and application

We use this book as a first year graduate level quantum class in the materials department. It has a nice balance of theory and application, but you still feel like you have a solid mathematical understanding of the concepts. The language is clear and not bulky, and Kroemer really tries to give you an intuition of the physics in addition to the math. The exercises are often rewarding to do since they are not too math-y but they get the concept across well and you feel like you've discovered something. The downside is sometimes this intuition is not entirely clear and you get lost in what Kroemer thinks is intuitive (he is a Nobel winner, so I'd imagine there are quite a few things more intuitive to him than to most people). Also, there are quite a few errors in the text, so be sure you have the errata handy with you (some of the errata are actually quite significant, like negative signs or rewrites of entire sections).

Overall, this book ties in the math and concepts nicely and connects the theory and application. It's very rewarding to learn from this book. The classic text from Griffiths complements this book well. I'd also recommend hardback; the paperback binding tends to fall apart. There are many paperback texts floating around the office where chunks of the book just come apart....

Very Good QM text

It is one of the finest books you will see on QM and if you are from the electrical engineering stream with semiconductor physics as your major,no text perhaps shall serve you better.The striking aspect of the book is the physical insight it gives into highly abstract theories of QM and the illustration of that theory with a relevant example from the engineering/physical world. Mathematical results we take for granted just as another interplay of the numbers are attributed to some very definite law of nature,for eg the unobservability of absolute frequencies in the probability density function of linearly superposed states is a case in point.Rather than leaving the mathematical expression as a difference of two frequencies he goes onto explain it and also draws an analogy between Electromagnetic waves and the point where the classical limit and the analogy breaks down.This is just one example out of the many scattered throughout the text.Any one with a working knowledge of QM and some introduction to semiconductor physics will immensely benefit from it, though physicists alike, I think can draw much information from the material presented.I hope this book has greater circulation.No wonder the author was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for his seminal work on semiconductor heterostructures.

Awesome book!

Prof Kroemer's book is just awesome. It doesnt go into too much mathematics, which is not usually the case for most QM books. It is written specifically for people who want to get a kind of intuitive feel for QM i.e. engineers. The book is very clear about its purpose. The chapters follow up each other in a very logical manner, and the text is precise and to the point. I had a great time learning from this book in my grad course.

An excellent synopsis on the Qing Dynasty

This book beautifully describes the social fabric of life during the Qing Dynasty. As the author claims, she was privy to previously undisclosed Imperial records and has unearthed new insights into Qing customs.
I was introduced to this book after reading Jonathan Spence's "Treason by the book". Mr Spence, perhaps the foremost sinologist writing in a Western vein, has himself praised this book for its fount of new information on the Qing period.
I couldn't agree more and can also add that it is highly readable.

Solid well written social history

In this work Dr. Rawski argues convincingly for her side of the sinicization debate regarding the Manchu conquest dynasty, the Qing (1644-1911). For those of you who are new to the field of modern Chinese history you may be interested in reading the articles of Rawski and Ho Ping-ti (He Pingdi) found in the Journal of Asian Studies, published in the mid-90's. The debate that was started by those articles is still of great importance to modern Chinese history, and it seems that although Rawski and others have presented a very strong case no one as of yet has been victorious. Many scholars still hold the views of Ho Ping-ti (or some version there of). Although, I suspect that over time Rawski's views will triumph. The argument, simply stated, is the question - to what extent where the "conquest dynasties," especially the Qing (Manchu) Dynasty, sinicized? In the past, scholars (perhaps dominated by the sino-centric Chinese interpretation) have agreed that foreign powers who dominated the Chinese empire forsook their own cultures in favor of a Chinese identity. This included the adoption of the Confucian civil service tradition as well as the Chinese language and many other Chinese cultural traits and behavior patterns. In recent years however, scholars have given evidence to support a very different view of dynasties like the Qing. A certain level of sinicization is undeniable, and no one challenges the fact that the Manchu banner-elite adopted a very Chinese approach to governance and cultural issues, however they also held on tightly to their own culture and went to great efforts to distinguish themselves from the Han Chinese as a ruling elite. The Manchu language, which many scholars had previously considered irrelevant (when studying modern Chinese history) has here become increasingly important. Rawski goes to great lengths to demonstrate the ways in which the ruling elite of China did not adopt 'Chinese' cultural practices but instead tried to be all things to all people. For the Tibetans and the Mongols they adopted the identity of a ruling clergy of Tibetan Buddhism, for the Chinese they adopted the Confucian model of governance, and for the Manchus they held on to various animistic traditions of sacrifice and deity worship.
This book is well written, except for a few minor stylistically uncomfortable passages, and really proves her point. Unfortunately, it does drag on a bit at times. Rawski gives an extremely detailed account of life in the upper echelons of Qing society focusing on the imperial household. There is a large body of work here and it will take several readings to truly imbibe all this book has to offer.
If you are looking to deepen your knowledge of the field I recommend "Manchus & Han: Ethnic Relations and Political Power in Late Qing and Early Republican China, 1861-1928 " by Edward Rhoads. It is a bit shorter and focuses on the ethnic and political divides between the ruling elite and the Han Chinese.

And yet, the history of its evolution has been lost, until now. In this first ever written history of the counterweight rigging system, author Rick Boychuk upends two core theatre myths. Stage rigging did not grow from a nautical tradition and counterweight rigging did not evolve from the hemp system. Boychuk neatly identifies the origins of the myth of the sailor-flyman and leaves no room for doubt. Counterweight rigging emerged from a European tradition of 17th century Torellian stage machinery. Hemp rigging was a side-show. In documenting the evolution of the counterweight system, Boychuk dissects the machine that is the stage house along with its upper machinery – the rigging. He examines the development of the fly tower, gridiron, loft steel, head steel, grid wells, arbor, bricks, blocks, and loft lines; all of those mundane components necessary to make the system work. He deconstructs hemp, counterweight and Torellian rigging into system paths to gain a better understanding of the progression of development and the workings of each system. This is the surprising story of how the counterweight rigging system was developed for an Austro-Hungarian theatre in 1888, then quickly found its way to the American Midwest in Adler & Sullivan's Chicago Auditorium in 1889. But it was the Chicago scenic painting studio Sosman & Landis that capitalized on the system. As Boychuk explains, Sosman & Landis adapted the system to increase the number of painted scenic pieces that they could sell to the well-funded Masonic theatres that were fast emerging across the United States. By 1925, the system had further evolved then to become crystallized in the catalogues of J.R. Clancy of Syracuse, NY. Clancy did for counterweight rigging what Ford had done for the automobile. Counterweight rigging was made affordable, was standardized and, soon, was ubiquitous in theatres around the world. A major takeaway from this book is this: the stage house impacted the evolution of stage machinery, and stage machinery impacted the evolution of the stage house. Today we appear to be witnessing a move from manual to automated stage machinery. If that is so, how will the change in our machinery impact our stage house? And how would we manage such a transition? Uniformed lazy here-say and B.S.

A struggle to unexplain the explained. It is amazing that Boychuck would attempt to write the History of a several thousand year old art and Trade and start 150 years ago, that is like writing a book on fishing and starting the History 150 years ago.
Waste of time and money, frustrated I paid for it.
Uninformed, lazy, here-say and B.S. not one redeeming quality.

Pure classic

"Modern ideas in Chess" is a very short book - too short, I think, but I include it in my "Best Chess books" list. Far from being just a technical or tactical book (you have hundreds like these), it demonstrates the changing concepts of chess. As I see it, it's one of the most important books for advanced players (only!!) who want to understand the development of the game from the mid. 19th century to the early 20th. century. Why did Capablanca ignored Morphy's move in a certain position? How did Dr. Lasker (probably the best chess player ever) succeed to hold the world champion title for more than 20 years? What ideas came with the "Hyper modern" masters, like Nimzovich, Alekhine, Breyer and Reti himself? What was the typical American style, that Reti observed? These questions and much more are answered in the book. I repeat myself and warn that the book is only for advanced, who's libraries are full of theory and technical books of the game, and want to learn more about the history of the chess thought.

Great Instructional Book

This is a great little book. It's not really long and has a lot of good ideas in it. You'll most likely read it and it won't sit on the shelf. A lot of chess books don't have a lot of meaningful instruction for class players. I think that this is a good instructional book. It's explains the development of chess thinking and technique from Morphy to Steinitz to Tarrasch to Lasker, etc. You know that Morphy was a great attacker and loved open games, but you probably didn't know that he greatly prized development above most other things. Reti has some great insights and instruction about the different styles of the old time greats. I feel like My system jumps around a lot. This book is more sequential.

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980) was a renowned philosopher, playwright, novelist, screenwriter, and literary critic. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964, an honor he declined.

Genet as a Living Existential Hero

In this 625-page masterpiece of psychoanalysis of one of our most complex men, the renown Existentialist Philosopher, Play write and French man of letters, Jean Paul Sartre, has turned his erstwhile compatriot, Jean Genet into his own private existential living hero -- built-up from whole cloth through literal allegory.

Jean Genet's biography is as well known, as it is scandalous. To wit: from the age of 10 Genet, a bastard "ward of the French State," became a willing societal tool and incorrigible. He was, at various times in his life: a beggar, thief, homosexual, prostitute, deserter, escapee from both reform schools and prisons, and was eventually declared by the French government as a "habitual criminal." When it was discovered that he was not just a writer, but an extraordinarily good one, Sartre and other members of the French Literati, requested and got him pardoned from an automatically earned life sentence.

Genet, then of course proceeded to continue to live out the life of what he had accepted as his defined role in society, as a vagabond, deadbeat, homosexual and criminal. Even later in life, after he had become both a famous and a wealthy writer, he traveled, continued thieving, defended revolutionary causes and never quite stopped giving "the middle finger" to the society that had previously rejected him. But to this list he could now also added the persona of writer.

As the New York Times reviewer put it so elegantly at the time of the book's release: "of all the forbidden literary fruits, Jean Genet was always the darkest and most dangerous." In this book Sartre echoes that sentiment by describing Genet's books as "an epic of masturbation ... a matchless, unholy trinity of scatology, pornography and the legitimate study of evil."

Yet, it is precisely in his unwillingness to live out the hand dealt to him by French society, that Genet emerges in Sartre's eyes as the ultimate existential hero. Sartre maintains that, only "by [actually] doing evil, could [Genet] discover the evil that [French society] had told him, he possessed. In Sartre's eyes, Genet, born into a meaningless and hostile world, filled with guilt, fear, evil, and vacillation could only be free by eventually learning how to rebel against the society that had so carefully categorized him and then so profoundly rejected him.

Much of Genet's materials were excavations from his prison dreams. In these, the whole world is but one big brothel. Genet's autoerotic visions were always populated with characters right out of central casting from the deepest, darkest and most evil of pornographic movies. Yet it was from the depths of this moral black hole, it was through these characters and dreams, that Genet awoke to an entirely different and new reality: One in which he was no longer just a hapless prop for French society, but one that he could master as a free and independent human being.

He had discovered the reality of words. Genet no longer needed to justify his existence by "treading water" through an assigned persona in a world thrust upon him by French society, he could become a hero in his own reality. And so he did. All of his writings and plays became famous. Genet became a rich man, but he remained, until his death of cancer in 1983, a man of simple counter-cultural taste. Until the bitter end, he mocked the society that had rejected.

Of Sartre, Genet himself said in his 1964 Playboy interview, that "in a world where everyone is trying to be a respectful prostitute, its nice to meet someone who knows he's a bit whorish but doesn't want to be respectable." About this biography, in that same interview, he said that "It filled me with a kind of disgust, because I saw myself stripped naked--by someone other than myself. When I strip myself I manage not to get too damaged as I disguise myself with words, with attitudes, with certain choices, by means of certain magic. My first impulse was to burn the book. I was almost unable to continue writing. Sartre's book created a kind of void which made for [me] a kind of psychological deterioration.

The Archaeology of a Life: Genet Unmasked

The thing about Genet is that he (and his writings and plays) cannot be fully understood without the help of a disinterested interpreter. His life, his biography, and the very architecture of his being is simply too complex to be inferred indirectly simply from his writings, that is through his twisted dark and demonic autobiographical tracts alone. Oh, it is possible to stumble upon it in a fit of random brilliance, but even then one is very unlikely to get the whole picture. It takes Sartre to give us the full picture. And here he gives it to us with the force that only a kind of mathematical exactness of psychological analysis, can give. The kind that one finds in writing only rarely: like once in a lifetime. (Amen)

The "Rosetta Stone" to Genet's existence is of course the single overpowering fact that he is born a dual bastard, knowing neither his mother nor his father. He is a man without a human passport. His resume lacks a biography. His personal psychology has no social geography -- that is, it has no definable social limits or secure connections or "hooks" into everyday reality. He is adrift, and has no way to situate himself in the world psychologically or socially except indirectly thorough what he can infer indirectly from others and through his own introspection. Socially he is a blind man "up the proverbial creek" trying to find his way in a hostile world that believes his very existence is "owed to them." He is born "a ward of the state" and thus into a world in which he is obligated to those who hate him because of his unfortunate birth. His life, his body of literary works, his truancy in life, are simply Genet's way of "feeling his way around" in an alien reality. Like a social blind man, he feels his way around in unfamiliar and unwanted territory. He is a trespasser and a spectator in his own life, all he has to guide him is his internal truths that are created "on the fly" as he is thrust along in life.

Sartre declares him a Saint because the morality he carves out for himself is based on a kind of pristine innocence and truth that will not admit to "bad faith." He sees morality as a local bipolar tool to create psychological stability, if not some sense of self-defined equanimity. If one is honest enough (and Genet is), one can forge a black and white morality out of any kind of debris - even that leftover from a hostile society -- and use it to drive ones own stake into even alien moral ground. That is why for Genet, there is no contradiction between being a committed bible-reading Altar Boy and a skillful full time thief.

This is what Genet does. This is who he is. This is his what he has become through his own self-creation project. This is his own announcement to the world of his being. He finds his way out of, and back into, a complex psychological world that becomes a morass of his own choosing. Guided only by a fierce honesty to what he perceives to be his own existential being, Genet creates a world on the "backside" of normal social meaning. It is rich, has its own internal consistency and most of all, is true and authentic to who Genet sees himself to be. For Genet, (and ultimately for Sartre) there is no "bad faith" in Genet's existence.

Thus, Genet to Sartre is a Saint, most importantly because his existence is an authentic existence, lacking the baggage of "bad faith. It therefore is existentialism in its purest and most pristine form. For us, Sartre uses Genet's life and works to open up a window into the world of Existential Psychology in a way that only he and Genet can do. This is heady stuff. 1000 stars

Wonderful

Genet is a deeply misunderstood genius. Much of this arises from his rebellion against heterosexual convention. But his vision captures the contradictions in all our natures and, if you can separate yourself from your prejudices (which is virtually impossible), you will be able to see he beauty and truth in his works.

Sartre is one of the few in the world who could see this.

About the Author
Murray L. Eiland Jr. has traveled extensively conducting field research and collecting rugs for study in the Middle and Far East. He is the author of Chinese and Exotic Rugs (1979). His son, Murray Eiland III, recently finished his doctorate in Near Eastern archaeology at Oxford. Both authors have conducted field research in the Middle East during 1996 and 1997 in preparation for this book.

Disappointing

This is a beautiful book, but the coverage is overwhelmingly for geometric oriental rugs, with a large section added for Chinese. I was looking for the more ornate styles (Heriz, Tabriz, Sultanabad, and so on) that are so very beautiful. These are grossly underrepresented in this book, if at all (e.g., most are not). I am sorry I purchased the book.

Oriental Carpets: A Complete Guide - The Classic Reference

Bought for myself as a tool to help teach myself about Persian rugs, this book is so wonderful I gave it as a housewarming present to a friend of mine, freshly divorced who is decorating his new house. Perfect! The authors, the Murray Eilands Jr. and III, a father and son team, are experts in their field. The father, a practicing psychiatrist in California, has been studying and collecting Oriental rugs for almost 40 years, and his son has a doctorate from Oxford in Near Eastern archeology (including textile development), so you would be learning from very special, knowledgeable accomplished folks who love their textiles and rugs. I recommend this book highly.

A good start

This book is a good introduction to rug basics, with rich illustration and good coverage of the main carpet-producing regions in Asia and the Middle-East. However, the book leaves much to be desired as a genuine tool to help one actually collect rugs. It gives out basic information in a general lecture-like fashion (which is not necessarily a bad thing), but does not really make an effort at reaching out to the reader in terms of the actual experience of buying/handling/trading carpets (which is definitely a bad thing). One glaring weakness is the paucity of information on Central Asian rugs outside of Turkmenistan (arguably because the book was written at a time when Central Asia was not as easily accessible as it is now). There is also, it must be said, a somewhat superior tone to the writing that is not necessary and does take away from the pleasure of reading on the subject. Still, all things considered, this is a valuable book to own.
