Hilarious read with some real world applications!

This book totally delivered on hilarity, and had me in stiches throughout. It was so incredibly well written, and the subtle and often times not so subtle sarcasm was conveyed effortlessly. Despite the premise of this book being a satirical take on one of the greatest villains ever, some real world practical business and life building concepts were actually employed by the CEO of the Empire. Buy this book and enjoy the quick read...you won't regret it at all!

I sought this book out after a friend told me about it. Then when I saw the cover I thought 'What the hell is this craziness?' I had my doubts. But man, does this thing deliver. Damn funny and surprisingly well written. The author parodies self-help & leadership books to great effect. Love all the pop culture references & the illustrations are killer. The picture of Justin Bieber frozen in carbonite still has me LOLing. Easily 5-stars and highly recommended.

I had not heard of this cyberpunk book until I came across it recently. Having read it I can see why. This was compiled in 1986 from stories written during the early eighties, and at that time the upcoming authors - all but one of whom are male - seemed to want a label to differentiate themselves from those authors we now call classic SF. That's it.

We now think of cyberpunk as involving jacking in to giant computer systems, in dystopian worlds, but that's because we've read Neuromancer by Gibson and the label cyberpunk sounds like the content. The stories in this book fit into various sub-genres such as space exploration, fantasy, time travel into alternate timelines, boring American road trips, gene alteration, post-apocalypse, drug abuse. At the time, the authors or editor seemed to call all of this cyberpunk because these authors wanted their own movement. Nothing seems to me to fit the current genre called cyberpunk.

One or two items are prophetic, such as an Arab terror cell of seven men wreaking destruction on the US banking system. (Note: all firms using big computers store backups. I am sure they did then too.) Some of the tales just have a lot of future jargon thrown around but not much story and no sympathetic characters. The introduction tells us that what unites cyberpunk is characters wearing mirrorshades, and then only in the last story - by the editor - does anyone wear these affected items. Actually, the main linking factor is a depressing view of the future, anyone's future.

Only one or two of the stories struck me as worth reading again, but everyone is different and some readers may like the collection more than I did. We've moved on, and this book is probably more useful to study the evolution of the genre.

A decent overview of sociolinguistics, even entertaining at times. The author draws heavily on Japanese linguistics at times, due to specialization there. Chapters include questions to check understanding and for further thought on each topic.

About the Author
Tom Perkins co-founded the leading venture-capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in 1972. He had previously served as administrative head of the research department and general manager of the computer division at Hewlett-Packard. Most recently, he joined the HP board of directors, retired, and officially rejoined the board days before Carly Fiorina’s firing. Also the author of Sex and the Single Zillionaire, he lives in the San Francisco area.

Exceptional But Also Uneven

The good parts are great. But there are also slow parts. First of all, this is not a biography although it is a shortened version biography. The first two chapters cover controversial periods of his life where he wants to get his side of the story heard, most notably the HP board spying controversy overwhich he resigned. Once he gets this off his chest there are some exceptional short stories, particularly his career at HP of which I had no idea. Obviously this experience is how he became the wealthy venture capitalist through the invaluable experience in the growth of HP and his close access to Packard and Hewlett as well as the many other Valley stars who were there at the time.

Where this book loses its way or becomes less interesting is when the author branches in to subjects that are diverse and of interest to him but maybe not the reader. For example, his sojurn into writing a cheesy novel which I previously read may not be of interest. Or, a reprinted interview about his short-term second wife, novelist Danielle Steele may not be of interest. Particularly when he insinuates that the interview cannot be believed. One thing is for sure, if you have no interest in sailing, this boat is definitely not for you as that is his passion including a complete chapter on a favorite novelist specializing in Clipper ships who he befriends. This is about 1/3 of the book.

All these sections have their own interest but I cannot overstate the value of his business discussions about HP and subsequently starting the famous venture capital firm which made him incredibly wealthy. this covers about 33% of the book.

There is one part of the book that is not covered sufficiently, the story of his wife of over thirty years who dies of cancer. Yes, it's covered briefly and their story is an incredible love story. But for the most passionate part of his life you would expect more. I would also mention there is a stunning picture confirming her beauty. On another note, there is virtually no mention of his children which I found surprising.

In summary, I do strongly recommend this book as Perkins' business contribution is significant to our national economy as he demonstrates here. Also, it is a very short read easily handled in a long day of plane travel.

great read! amazing story!

So I read Mines Bigger by David Kaplan and was interested to read more about Mr Perkins, so I found Valley Boy and read it. I am truly interested in Tom's story and business touch. Its been inspirational reading for me and I felt a connection with the boating and yachting stories as I share the same hobbies and interests like cars, etc. I highly recommend the book to anyone! Also go online and google (a KP start) either Tom Perkins or his yacht the Maltesse Falcon. There are a couple great videos out there on you tube, etc. to help sum anything up. If you still read the amazon reviews as you said in an interview, Thanks Tom! Great Book and Great Story! But why did you sell the Falcon?

Fantastic read about a fascinating man's life..

I never read these kinds of books; I could care less how Steve Jobs got there, or any of the others, but this book caught my interest and it was one of those rare books that I couldn't tear myself away from! A witty and charming insight into what must be a truly exceptional man, not just for his wealth, but for the rich and satisfying life he leads..

I went on to read the book about the boat, because the chapter here about it was rather brief. The info in "Mine' Bigger" was interesting and fleshed out the process of the Falcon's conception and creation, but the writer took a rather sarcastic tone throughout, almost vengeful, as though he was envious of Perkins' good fortune..

Get Valley Boy.. it's a charmer.. and although I never read 'trashy' books, I'm tempted on the strength of this one to get his Sex and the Single Zillionaire' just for fun.

Excellent essays

I downloaded this book while it was free and it was even better than I expected. The book is more a collection of essays about his life (in chronological order) than a memoir. The author was 86 when he wrote it, but certainly does not sound like an old man. His writing is focused and at times poetic. His advise is priceless.

This is a really short "book" and not very well-written. I value every first-person account of the Holocaust as tragic history, but this book didn't give enough detail for me to get really involved.

This book was really exciting to read. What a thoughtful man. He came from such meager beginnings and has done so much with his life. Lots of women too! Definitely a book people should read.

rip off, sorry but it's true.

While anything with Clavell's name attached to it is simply marvelous - and don't get me wrong, this is still a wonderful story - this is just the incomplete, chopped up, TV version of his incredible book 'Whirlwind.' There is nothing new; don't let the 'love story' bit fool you. Entire plots and characters are left out, or are mentioned only in passing. There is no intelligent reason to buy this book. Buy Whirlwind instead. Coronet Books has managed to take money from me for an incomplete version of a book I have already read. Disgusting. Three stars is very, very generous.

Watered down Whirlwind...

Unfortunately, James Clavell and his publisher fought during the last few years of his life. The result was that his final Asian saga novel, Whirlwind, is out of print. Escape is a watered down version of that novel, developed for a movie script. The core story is still there, but to get Clavell's intended story, buy Whirlwind at a used bookstore or online auction site.

Great work by the author,of the many good things, its the real life like depictions that makes this book a joyful read.One can actually potray themselves on the Bike enjoying the rides in the different parts of India, Not to forget the wonderful chai!!! I actually was glued to the book and finished it in 2 days on my Subway journey to work.Wish there were more books like this.

The author took me on a journey of India that made me want to go and travel the roads myself and seemed to give me an inside look into real India. A must read for all those interested in exploring the beautiful country of India. The stories told by the author made me laugh and keept me reading to see what adventure he would have next. Quiero mas Kingcross

Muy buena historia de epoca, Teresa la protagonista mujer que NO se autocompadece y sabe afrontar las situaciones siendo siempre fiel a ella misma. Rod Kingcross hombre duro, desconfiado que tendra que luchar con sus deminios para poder ser feliz. Muy bien narada, no cae en cliches, cubre todas las historias sin dejar cabos sueltos y como no con ganas de saber mas. Se pued leer sola, pues el libro antetior es la historia de su amiga Cammy y yo no me he enterado hasta ver que mas tenia esta autora. Me encantaria saber que pasara con Liz Kingcross o con Miguel (hermanos de los protagnistas) y que es de sus respectivas vidas.

La historia de Teresa e bien interesante con un primer marido que la engana y le dice wue no puede tenet hijo y el segundo que es rob que no quiere reconoser que la ama es una trama muy interesante
