A hands-on book to get started with AngularJS applications

AngularJS Web Application Development Blueprints is a hands-on book that helps even people with little background in Javascript development to get started and become productive with AngularJS.
After a few introductory chapters, where the reader learns the basics of AngularJS and how to setup a meaningful development environment and what are the main tools involved, the book starts to explain more advanced topics.

Every chapter focuses on a specific kind of application, so the reader can follow the whole coding process until the app is complete, while learning the chapter concepts and techniques.
There are many topics covered and many go beyond the scope of just learning AngularJS, but they are a bonus needed to understand how real world apps like the ones explained in the book should be developed.
The most interesting chapters explain how to build an application on a MEAN stack and how to deploy a complex app on the AWS platform.
The reader can also download a large code bundle with all the apps explained throughout the book, including the development environment.

In summary, this is a nice book to read if you want to learn what you need to start to develop complex applications using AngularJS and the options you have to deploy them on currently available platforms.

It takes a practical approach to explaining the various concepts in Angular making it very easy to understand and follow

I had just started working on a new project involving Node and AngularJS, that’s when I stumbled upon this book. This book is quite different from the others that I’ve read so far. It takes a practical approach to explaining the various concepts in Angular making it very easy to understand and follow. The book has quite a few useful examples like integrating facebook with your app, using Angular UI, switching the routing between Node and Angular, using Interceptors etc. all of which came in quite handy while working on my project.
What I really liked about this book is that it goes beyond just Angular and covers other allied skillsets like CSS theming, optimizing your page load times and deploying apps on AWS. It would have been good to see examples of how to deploy to other cloud platforms like Google App Engine, Heroku or Digital Ocean.

A serious learners guide to AngularJS

AngularJS Web Application Development Blueprints

Trying to be objective as this should be a blueprint for a total beginner. I'd recommend having a decent background in web development prior to purchasing this book, with that said this book did the trick for me. I've got other books on AngularJS and have left reviews for those as well. This book covers so much ground in so little time, using various plugins to bring together a concrete framework that will help get an application going within a short amount of time.

I don't feel the a 1 star rating was appropriate from some reviews, this book may have some things you can find in the documentation but why not have a nice hands on guide that gets you going with an bunch of applications from start to finish, letting you see the milestones as you go. Priceless for learning, and on top of that the book get's serious on page 103 with unit testing and mocking up returns for testing.. really neat and informative way to test my application before I unleash it on users who may experience some anomalies that would've been avoided in the first place.

Worth the cost if you really want to get hands on with AngularJS.

Opposites attract and the steam rises from all the heat

This is a most surprising title. I thought it would be romance, but the relationship is too complicated to call it that. Ondry and Liam are friends and competitors and family and coworkers and finally lovers. They show how love and trust can overcome fear and differing languages and cultural confusion. Having moved from my own culture into a new one, I am at comfort in Liam's skin. He is someone I would have much to share with were he real. So watching all his pain revealed and watching him find a safe home and a man (alien) to love him felt amazingly good. I read the book and immediately started to read it once more. It is a great favorite.

Frustrating

The problem with this book is that we get cheated out of most of the story. A book consists of rising action, climax and resolution. This book skips the rising action and starts us at the climax. This wouldn't be so frustrating if I didn't like the book that we did get as much as I did.

The work that Lyn Gala puts into creating the Rownt is nothing short of brilliant. You really get the sense these aliens are as real and have as rich a cultural heritage as human beings.

But we missed out on so much.

I would have liked to have seen, at least in flashbacks, Liam and Ondry getting to know each other. I would have loved to have seen more of Liam struggling with his place in the military. I would have enjoyed seeing more of the supporting cast.

It's just a shame that the author put so much work into the world and neglected her story.

Tentaclesex? (Yes there is a tentaclesex scene)

Oh you know this is going to be a great story! I expected a story between an human linguist, Liam and a Rownt alien, Ondry, Adding in some hot sex with maybe a tentacle of two.

Based on the blurb and the author's note, my expectations for this story were surpassed into subspace. The author did a wonderful job with creating an excellent Dom. Thinking back on some BDSM horror stories I've read in the recent past, Ondry, the story's Dom had a lot of the qualities I love reading in a character. He was attentive, dominant without coming across as a jerk with power.

For this novella, the range of emotions portrayed was spot on. Poor Liam, I wanted to hug him for all the strife he has been through. It made him such a deliciously flawed character (my favorite!) Liam has ignored his submissive side for many years after being abused and neglected and the care that Ondry shows while not fulling understanding the human concept of rape and prostitution, it was a great aspect of the story.

Imagining a society where that type of pain doesn't happen does feel like a fantasy world. I love the Rownt and their...alien ways. The matriarchal society with grandmothers being in charge? I adored it. It's great reading MM where the women are not made to be bitches.

The length? It is satisfying with enough back story.

Would I read more from this author? Hell yes. This is my second Lyn Gala book of the year and it most certainly will not be my last. She writes such quality characters that leave you reflecting on them for hours on end.

The plot? Damaged, submissive ex-rent boy finds a Dom man enough (or this case, alien) to handle him. It's just with a futuristic twist. Lyn Gala breathed a unique breath of life into this tried and true plot. What I also enjoyed that this story was not just about sex, certain aspects make it physically impossible for a Rownt and human to have sex. (Read on to see how these two get past it. You might be pleasantly stimulated.)

This is a definite FOUR & A HALF STAR read. Lyn Gala, I've got my reader's eye on you. I love your style.

Undeniable is like reading three books in one. With a little taste of more.

Diana has saved herself for twenty-five years for her soul mate. Her grandmother tells her that she will tell her when she is to meet the man she’s meant to be with and she can lose her innocence. Her grandmother is the only one that shows her any love. Her mother went missing and her dad is to obsessed about vampires to give her the attention that she craves.

Sebastian is a vampire that take care of the innocent. He stepbrother gets killed so he is sent to use Diana to get back at her father Frank for killing the vampires. He is also sent to find out if she is involved. When he follows her and gets to know her he can’t bring himself to do it.

I’ll I can say so that I don’t give the story away is there is more to this than just Diana and Sebastian. It sorta has to deal with the saying of “the sins of their fathers.” I will tell you that it’s like reading three stories in one.

The author did a great job bringing all stories into one. She didn’t over do it or under do it. I believe that it was just right. In a way the way she brought other people into the story if there will be another. Maybe not a series but a story of some of the younger vampires.

The story had a great plot. It was pretty suspenseful and you never knew what was going to happen next. The passion was great and so was the sex. I enjoyed getting to know about Angelina and Damien’s story. To be in love for over thirty years and to put the needs of her son first. To never know what really happened with your one true mate. To think that one of them went mad without the other.

All I can say is that some people’s eyes are opened up to the real picture of what’s going on. While some people get what they really deserve in the best possible pay back imaginable. I really enjoyed this great vampire book and learning more things about them. Also gave me a new author and read more books by her.

So if your looking for a vampire story with suspense and some very buried secrets and let’s not forget the hot steamy sex. This is the book for you.

In July 2000 more than 200 researchers came together in Gothenburg, Sweden, for the `3rd International Conference on the Molecular Biology and Physiology of Water and Solute Transport" to discuss progress in this emerging research field. 58 different presentations from this conference are the basis for this book. Stars and Christtmas Wishes

Loretta Chase's skilled writing - yes. Second chance romance - yes. Sweet children - yes. Christmas themes, including the magic of falling stars and diamonds and special wishes - yes. A satisfying HEA ( the scene where the h and H break the news to the twins is lovely) - yes.
A heroine who is decent, kind, loving, intelligent, honourable and no push-over. A mother and a 28 year-old who has learned from life's experiences and disappointments, but has not been embittered by them. (In fact, she describes her marriage as being happy, not only because it gave her two gorgeous daughters.)
A hero who is dashing, successful, somewhat ruthless, argumentative and irritated to find himself beguiled by the woman he feels let him down ten years ago. And who is drawn to visit his brother's house at Christmas, without warning, for reasons that escape him - only to discover that he has been lonely and that he yearns for love and a family of his own.
All these components lead to a highly satisfactory second-chance Christmas romance. (The second sentence in Willread's review says it well.)
How great that these early Chase stories are being released in Kindle version. I bought it again, even though I had previously read this story through a library loan. Keep the ebook releases coming please, Ms Chase.

Should have been a full size novel - 3.45 stars

This is a short and very sweet story of two people who fell in love too young and were given a second chance 10 years later. And I mean……short and sweet. I am not crazy about novellas but occasionally I come across a stunner (see Grant’s “A Christmas Gone Perfectly Wrong”). This one fell a bit short of my expectations.

I don’t think that the novella was the best format for this particular story. It screamed for detail, and the novella format was just too limiting for Chase’s talents. Marcus and Christina fall in love when she is 18 and he is 24, but we never really get a taste for how they fell in love- it appeared more to be physical attraction than anything else, which is not my favorite premise. They look at each other, there is instant attraction, a stolen kiss in the garden, and that’s it – they are in love – not much detail in between. Even the resolution was a quick dash through romance-land. Chase can write slow, building steam like no other, but that talent was lost here, and I really missed it.

There is some great dialogue, and the twins are pretty cute. Anything by Chase is a treat, and for that I agree this was a lovely way to spend an afternoon, but I just wish it had been a full-size novel - what Chase could have done with that would have knocked my socks off.

Lovely second chance at romance story from 1992.

This story first appeared in a 1992 anthology, A CHRISTMAS COLLECTION. I never read it then, 23 years ago, but it has held up well. As a matter of fact, it has probably improved by virtue of the lackluster competition it has this year from 2015 Christmas stories and novellas. I've read several 2015 releases and so far have not really enjoyed any, so this story was like a breath of fresh air.

It's a second-chance romance that gave me the warm fuzzies. The attraction between H and h is palpable, the dialogue is fun and witty, and the heroine's young daughters and their budding relationship with the hero is actually quite delightful. (And this is said by a grouchy, curmudgeon reviewer who doesn't usually like children in a romance.)

Ten years ago 18-year-old Christina attended the wedding of a dear friend. There she met the 24-year-old brother of the friend's husband-to-be and there's a grudging but very strong mutual attraction. Unfortunately, the stars are not well aligned for this romance. They separate and In the 10-year interim, Christina marries, has twin daughters and is widowed. She and hero Marcus meet again for the first time since that wedding at the home of her friend and friend's husband, sister-in-law and brother of Marcus.

And there you are. Will they make a go of their second chance or is there too much bitterness and misunderstanding between them? Hint: It's a romance. So maybe no surprises, but as long as Chase is in fine writing form (and she is here) whatever she offers is well received by me. This story is cute, romantic and gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling. It may not be a 5-star romance for everyone, but it is for me, in spite of costing more than it should for an only-64-page recycled story.

A Seminal, Challenging Analysis of Puritan Thought and its Importance in the Shaping of American Identity

Sacvan Bercovitch, Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature at Harvard University, presents in this important book an analysis of what he refers to as the "rhetoric of American identity" through the "sources of our obsessive concern with the meaning of America" (p. ix). He uses one central case study to explore this issue, "Nehemias Americanus," Cotton Mather's biography of John Winthrop, first published in 1702. In Winthrop Mather discovered not only "a reliable model of christic identity" (p. 24) but also the "idea of the exemplary American" (p. 35). This is especially because of Winthrop's sense of progress, wherein a "redemptive history" merged personal worth with national mission. Puritans, in Bercovitch's vision, saw themselves as "American Israelites, the sole reliable exegetes of a new, last book of scripture" (p. 113). He argues that Cotton Mather, perhaps the epitome of the Puritan thinker, assigned America the status of a "microcosm of the worldwide work of redemption, and macrocosm of the redemptive work underway in each of its chosen people" (p. 134). This blending of personal story--essentially a spiritual biography--with a national prophecy and mission has been a persistent theme in American history and was first apparent in the writings of the early American Puritans.

Bercovitch goes a step further with his analysis, however, by noting that this Puritan approach to personal/national identity provided a handy but complex structure for later generations to think of their place in the world. The result was a belief in human perfectibility and a strong utopian impulse in American intellectual thought and political tradition. From Thomas Jefferson's stirring statement in the Declaration of Independence that people must work to ensure that all receive their unalienable rights of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," to the sense of destiny in recent America, the quest for a better world has been a major subtext of every aspect of American life. As Bercovitch shows, this strain of thought offers a "celebration of the representative self as America, and of the American self as the embodiment of a prophetic universal design" (p. 136).

"The Puritan Origins of the American Self" is a difficult reading experience. It uses the language of hermeneutics in its analysis and routinely employs such jargon as "auto-American-autobiography." More importantly, some may appropriately conclude that Bercovitch overstates his case, questioning if the Puritan mindset permeated American character to the degree he claims. Even so, this is required reading for students of early American history. It offers an important interpretation of the intellectual legacy of Puritan thought on the United States.

Brilliant and Indispensable

This is the single most important study of the formation of "America"--its culture, history and literature. Professor Bercovitch's brilliant analysis of these Puritan texts should be essential reading to anyone even remotely interested in undertanding the often bizarre nature of American society. Working with original Puritan chronicles, diaries and other texts, Bercovitch shows that so much of what we take for granted in this culture has a distinctly Puritan origin. Read this book, and you will never view any aspect of this country the same way again.

Excellent but claims too much

Bercovitch proves his case that the Boston Puritans set the tone for the American mind, especially its belief that it had a special mission (from God) to create a 'city on a hill' which would redeem the rest of the world, especially decadent Europe. One can hear the same rhetoric from Presidents Kennedy, Reagan and GW Bush. Hence the name 'New' England, to distinguish the colony from bad 'olde' England. Bercovitch shows that Cotton Mather was the first to use the word "America" like we do, as a distinct place populated by people similar but different from Europe. Thus, as early as the 1600's, the colonists were thinking of themselves as Americans, and the split in identity with England would grow only wider, culminating in the inevitable revolution.

The reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that Bercovitch claims that Cotton Mather's ideology stretched all the way to RW Emerson. While there may be some external similarities in both stressing the uniqueness of America, the differences between the two are much more prominent. Succinctly, Emerson stood against virtually everything Mather stood for, staunchly denying Mather's Calvinist Christianity, veering past Unitarianism into agnostic pantheism. In the end, Emerson's deconstruction of biblical religion has contributed to the devastation of the 'nation' that Mather knew, one based on Biblical ethics.

About the Author
Peter Barry serves as principal engineer in the Intel Embedded & Communications Group. He has worked in the development of embedded systems for over twenty years in Intel, Basic Communications, Nortel Networks and Tellabs, working with processors from Z80, 68K, PowerPC, ARM, XScale and Intel architecture systems. He is an expert in embedded operating systems and embedded platforms, and has developed board support packages for proprietary RTOS, pSOS, VxWorks, WinCE and Linux. He has developed protocol stacks and applications primarily for data communications and telecommunications and industrial applications.

Patrick Crowley is an associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. His research interests are in computer and network systems architecture, with a current focus on the design of programmable embedded network systems and the invention of superior network monitoring and security techniques. He co-founded the ACM/IEEE Symposium on Architectures for Networking and Communications Systems, and co-edited the three-book series, Network Processor Design. He serves as Associate Editor of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. In 2007, Crowley was chosen to join the DARPA Computer Science Study Group.

Comprehensive survey of modern embedded system design

I'm a mechanical engineer, sorta bored at my job so I look for a book on embedded systems to build some neat stuff in my spare time. I get this book in 2013 because I like the table of contents and that it was written in 2012. It turns out to NOT be the stock, boring type on programming 8-bit/16-bit microcontrollers but a great survey of building entire systems from the ground up. So here's my 2 cents on why the book is great and where it can improve:

Pros:
- Good coverage of every layer of embedded systems: hardware (32-bit CPU's/GPUs, networking ASIC's, peripherals) to software (OS fundamentals, kernels, application frameworks) to networking (protocols and key considerations)
- Useful example code in Python and C/C++ to illustrate concepts
- Great introductory coverage of advanced concepts in modern embedded hardware (instruction pipelining, multiprocessing and the like)

Cons (consider as suggestions for 2nd edition):
- So many typos!
- Motivate topics better. For example, in the chapter on networking, there's a lot of "this is a cool concept but we'll talk about it later". If it's that important, talk about it first

Overall, these authors know what they are talking about and are actually quite visionary. I may even start a company based on some ideas picked up here, besides enriching my hobby life!

PS: Perhaps some EE / CS major will think this is a pretty shallow book but if you are a beginner serious about learning embedded systems the right way, this is the book for you!
