Preternaturals and their issues

"Kiss of the Vampire" by Cynthia Garner is the first of her series about the preternaturals (pejoratively known as Extra-dimensionals/EDs) who have come to Earth from another dimension through a rift which usually opens every 73 years. Beings such as vampires, fairies, werewolves, shapeshifters and demons take possession of human bodies and confer their various powers upon the shell whose owner is dispossessed. Nix de la Fuente has the distinction of being a demon/human hybrid whose mother is a specialized demon known as a succubus. She works as a liaison with the regional Council of Preternaturals and investigates various crimes by working with Detective Dante MacMillan, one of the few humans who knows that she isn't completely human. An investigation into the horrific murder of a vampire who she knew personally brings her into contact with the vampire who broke her heart five years prior. Tobias Caine is a vampire who has been tracking the assassin who killed his people's leader for many years. His decision to break off the relationship with Nix five years ago was one of the hardest things he has done in his long life and he is not sure whether he will have the strength to resist her when they are forced into close proximity while investigating the series of crimes on behalf of the council. There are many factors impeding the investigation but undermining by their own support system is not anticipated and may cause the final irreversible end to their relationship if they don't learn to trust each other.

This was an interesting new twist on the origin of paranormal beings, the difficulties they could face when dealing with humans and the distrust and discrimination that being different engenders. The apparent strength and other benefits that come with paranormal powers can also cause handicaps and Nix has an interesting solution for controlling excess emotion with the use of tai chi. The sizzling carnal relationship between Nix and Tobias is contrasted with the rare bonds that Nix has formed with the human Dante and her friend Rufus and all is set against an intriguing murder investigation. A good start to an imaginative series that will continue with the tale of another colleague, Council Liaison Tori Joseph, in "Scent of the Wolf".

Fabulatastic Paranormal Suspense!!!

This was a fabulous story! Cynthia Garner is a new to me author and I'll definitely be checking out more of her work in the future! Her writing style is highly unique and she instantly captivated me with her preternatural world. She takes the paranormal realm and twists is up with vampires, shifters,demons and other beings being from another planet, crossing over the "rift" and stealing the bodies to live among us. Definitely a new twist for this reader!

Nix de la Fuente is a demon-human who is helping to solve the many crimes arising from the humans and supernaturals. Only one person she knows, knows of her demon-human life, and that's her close friend and partner Dante. Together they are working to solve the unrelenting crimes of the world. But, when a vampire friend is murdered, her world turns upside down. There's a new vampire in town. And it's not who she expected.

Tobias Caine is the newest vampire investigator on the scene of his murdered friend and he comes face to face with the one person he never expected to see again: his ex, Nix. Seeing her again brings back all the emotions he thought he could get over. Turns out, he was wrong. But, there's a murderer on the loose and he has to find out who's behind it before it's too late to tell Nix the truth.

This is an excellent new paranormal romantic suspense novel that's overflowing with amazing characters and a plot line that will make your head spin! I loved the complexity of the issues at hand in the preternatural world, and passion that sparks between old lovers is absolutely fantabulous! This is a 5 Book worthy and beyond start to yet another wonderful paranormal series that will be high on my recommendations list! I absolutely can't WAIT to Dante's story in Secret Of The Wolf!!! It will be on the top of my wishlist, for sure!

A rift has opened between dimensions allowing all supernatural races to descend to earth. Now there is a war brewing and it is up to a strong few to save the planet from annihilation.

Nix de la Fuente is half demon and half human a fact no one has ever let her forget. She is looked down upon in the supernatural society because of her human genes but that hasn't stopped her from protecting humans as well as supernaturals. Nix works as the human liaison for the Council of Preternaturals and the local authorities. Her latest case takes a disturbing twist as a friend becomes a victim and her ex comes back to town to investigate.

Tobias Caine's weakness will always be Nix but he's not likely to tell her that. When a friend is viciously murdered he is assigned to the case by the council. Too bad his determination to stay away from Nix isn't as strong as it is to find the killer. One look and he can't figure out how he stayed away.

As Nix and Tobias forge ahead in their investigation they discover an old enemy may be afoot. Can they find those responsible before more bodies show up? Will their attraction help them or cost them more than they can imagine?

Kiss of the Vampire is a dark and sensual romance. Nix and Tobias share an intense lust filled attraction. It is obvious these two had a very hot relationship. I had trouble getting attached to this couple because it was obvious there was a lot of history between them and I felt like I missed out on that. They mystery surrounding the deaths is complex and intriguing. I really loved Nix's partner Dante. He is a sexy character and comic relief in some heavy moments as well. Kiss of the Vampire felt very procedural to me. I definitely got the feeling the case was the main story instead of the relationships. This is cool it just depends on what you prefer. I would rather the story be mostly about the relationship.

Better than the adult novel

Last winter I took my 8-year-old daughter to see The Force Awakens in theaters. Both of us decided to read the respective novelizations of The Force Awakens -- she read this novel, I read the "adult" one by Alan Dean Foster.

This one is much better.

Foster's book is a dull, poorly written mire. The pacing is terrible, with some of the best action scenes victims to lifeless, roundabout writing. I've read some of Foster's other books and they are much better, so I don't know what happened there.

After I read that book I took a look at this one, and I was astonished at the difference. The junior novel is lucidly written, well-paced, and the action scenes -- dare I say it? --- feel like real action scenes. There are even some extra moments that weren't in the film that flesh out the story a little. I don't recall seeing any of those with the adult version.

One caveat: the book is listed as being for grades 3-7, and while my 2nd grade daughter enjoyed it, it definitely challenged her, so bear that in mind as you decide whether or not to get this for your child.

No spoilers in my review, great book

Almost word for word matches the movie. However, this book also translates what BB8 is saying, and what other characters are thinking, whereas in the movie, you have to decipher all those thoughts in just long stares. A little more insight into Finn than you might get from the movie. If you can't get to the movie, this can get you caught up on the twists and surprises.

Wow! Love this book

Okay, while I haven't read the whole book yet because I didn't want to spoil anything before I saw the movie. The prologue and the first chapter are amazing. Michael's prologue encapsulates the history of the Star Wars Saga and the back story to the Force Awakens in a way only a true star wars fan could. It brings feelings of nostalgia and hope for the pages to come. (Okay, I have read a little ahead, I can't stop myself). This is definitely a page turner. Great Job!

Everything you would need to know about motors

I took on a freelance job and needed to get more detailed information/advice regarding motors and motor control. This book was all I needed. It's very informative and well written. It teaches you about the types of motors, how to select the right motor for your application, and finally how to control them using different kinds of circuits and integrated circuits. If you want to know the mathematical details of torque, how to measure your motor's torque, or how to decipher motor specs, it is all in this book.

This book will be a great reference even for someone who already has some knowledge of motors.

Pieces Good (but book is weak for 2011t)

This book was a reasonable first review of robot drives. I particularly benefited from the review of PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control which oddly enough I see very little discussion on in some of the forums and books I have seen. It has some really basic review of certain concepts - which might be helpful to some. However, the chip sets proposed are older, the websites that no longer exist are numerous, leaving somewhere around 2/3 of the book really weak.

Tongue in cheek writing style for most of book.

I'm going to keep looking for more complete, up to date book. Just not worth the price, given its age. Should be under $10 to interest folks. (Actually, the more I think about it - suggest you spend your money on something more up to date.)

5 stars for book, 2 stars for CD (windows only)

I want to give the “OCM Java EE 6 Enterprise Architect Exam Guide” book 5 stars and the CD with the practice exam 2 stars. I'll compromise and give the whole entity 4 stars. What's wrong with the CD you ask? It requires Windows. When I installed it on my Windows virtual machine, I got an error that it could not register the font Lucidia-Sans Regular TrueType. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to install fonts and that the system supports this font.” The software worked fine without the font, so I could have done with the error. Also, the hint button in practice mode (titled “assistance”) looked like a title and it took me a few minutes of searching to find it.

Ok, now that I've gotten that out of the way, let's go on to the actual book. All three parts of the exam are covered. I think part 1 is covered the best followed part 3. This makes sense as part 2 of the exam is more “doing.”

As with other McGraw-Hill books, there are some hands on exercises and each chapter ends with a two minute drill along with practice questions. Some of the questions were true/false and not representative of the exam format. They don't tell you how many answers are correct which makes them harder.

I particularly liked the tables. Both to review topics and to map scenarios to patterns and technologies. This is a skill you need for the exam so it was great to have it highlighted. I like that it wasn't an artificial world. The book mentions Eclipse, Spring, Guice and WebSphere. I also liked the phrase “note that these answers are not necessarily what you might encounter in your workplace.” I was surprised to see so much JavaScript code in the book, but it was apparent that isn't on the exam.

When I look the (SCEA 5) exam, I used the Cade/Sheil book. Allen/Bambara's book covers version 6, has much more detail on what you need to know and has way more practice questions. It's actually possible to use it to study instead of just as a brief review.

but still means the book will useful to working software engineers interested in architecture

This book does a decent job describing the architect exam and the principles needed to pass the first part of the exam, with some insights into the second and third. The introduction promises to take a conceptual approach, which isn’t completely realized in the following chapters, but still means the book will useful to working software engineers interested in architecture, even if they don’t take the certification exam.

Anyone who is seriously considering taking this exam will already have exposure to many of the topics covered here: UML, EJBs, messaging, design patterns, security, etc. Each chapter could be a book on its own, so there’s really not room to go into much detail. The book is laid out to parallel the exam objectives, which makes it a good way to discover your weak areas, but also leads to quite a bit of overlap, and in some cases word-for-word duplication from previous sections. “Exam Watch” sidebars do a good job of relating the text to what you might encounter on the exam, but, oddly, they are sparsely used. There should be more a lot more of these. Diagrams and illustrations are also too sparsely used and don’t always synch perfectly with the accompanying text. They feel like something of an afterthought. The text style varies, and while it is often engaging, there are parts that just seem to be laundry lists of features for the technology under discussion.

Overall, this book fulfills its promise of presenting the concepts needed to succeed on the architect exam. Readers will find themselves skimming many of the sections, since they will already be familiar with the material, but it’s a good review, and I found several places where my own knowledge was incomplete, especially on technologies recently introduced.

A disappointment

Although I understand this book is not an official guide to the Java EE architecture, rather an aid in preparing oneself for the exam, I would expect a bit more from a product bearing the Oracle logo. The book consists of bloated, very general descriptions randomly interleaved with technical details. Some sentences are repeated over and over for no apparent reason. The general feeling is more of a draft then a finished product. If you are looking for comprehensive guide to Java EE seek elsewhere.
