Gittle, A Girl of the Steppes was inspired by the handwritten memoirs of the author's grandmother, a spirited Jewish woman who grew up in 19th century Ukraine, then controlled by Russia. Gittle is only 10 months old when the family sleigh overturns in the wintry countryside and her mother is killed. Gittle is found alive, rescued from wolves, and becomes her father's favorite, educated beyond the norm for girls in those times. But at sixteen, she loses her father and submits to his dying wish that she join his wealthy cousin's household. Although the family welcomes her, she is almost raped by a member of the household. She barely escapes and on her way home, meets a traveling mill salesman who becomes smitten with her. His family sends a matchmaker to arrange a match, and once Gittle and Yacov are married, they move to his hometown, a village just south of Kiev. The people who fill Gittle’s world range far beyond shtetl folk and her own growing brood. Her husband's cousin, a noted dressmaker to the Russian court, is one of few Jews permitted to reside in Kiev, and she shows Gittle around that historic city. There, Gittle comes into contact with some of Russia’s pleasure-loving aristocrats clinging to their outmoded privileges. For Gittle and her family, however, life in Russia under Czar Nicholas' persecution of the Jews grows increasingly dangerous. To raise money for their escape from Russia, Gittle makes the risky decision to sell moonshine whiskey to the peasants. She is caught by the authorities and imprisoned. Gittle's story is a gripping tale of one woman's struggle to survive in Czarist Russia.

An well-done Jewish version of "Little House on the Prairie"

Just finished this self-published historical novel and was very pleasantly surprised. Actually a memoir set in Ukraine at the end of 19th century, the book is essentially a Jewish version of Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House on the Prairie" series. Gittle was born in 1871 and Laura in 1867, so the time period covered is almost identical. Each starts with the author's childhood and ends in early adulthood, and both contain vivid scenes of sadness, danger, friendship, and family solidarity under challenging circumstances. This one had a stronger focus on romance, in this case between Gittle and her beloved husband Yacov, which I certainly appreciated.
For many American Jewish women, this book's niche audience, Gittle could be their ancestress. Certainly she could be my gr-grandmother, or maybe one of my gr-grandparents' sister, since Gittle came to the US a generation earlier than my grandparents. I loved the "Little House" books, but knew those stories weren't my family's history. Maybe I've missed them, but I'm not aware of other shtetl novels told from a woman's POV, especially not a memoir. I definitely enjoyed, and recommend this book. The reasons I didn't give it 5 stars are that the last chapter, which details Gittle's arrest and imprisonment followed by her leaving Russia and emigrating to America, was too rushed. Since the book is barely 200 pages long, it should have, and easily could have, been at least 2 or 3 chapters longer. In addition, its self-published status was evident in some places where closer editing was needed.

Wonderful historical narrative!

This is a wonderful "read"! Estelle Rubin Brager translated her grandmother's memoirs and then revised the story into a vivid, historically instructive narrative. In 19th century Ukraine young Gittle lives through rural poverty, the threat of pogroms, and being orphaned. As a young mother she creates her own business and negotiates the sexism and anti-Semitism of the era. Raising 5 children, she helps them survive an accident in the family mill, a fire that destroys their home, and her own imprisonment for selling whiskey in order to pay for tickets to America. The first-person narrative evokes Gittle's spirited response to people and life and keeps the story well-paced. I strongly recommend this for anyone interested in family historical narrative, Jewish history, or just a good book to read.

An Extraordinary Woman and A Great Read

This is the story of a fascinating woman living under extraordinary and difficult circumstances. It reads like a work of fiction, fast and engaging, and the main character's life is both surprising and inspiring. For her time, Gittle is clearly a unique woman and so is her story. This is a wonderful read and brings to life the struggles and courage of those who emigrated to this country and made new lives for themselves and their families.
